Oil companies finding different ways to educate employees
Admit it, you’ve played some type of mind-numbing game on your smartphone or tablet when you have a few minutes to waste. From solitaire to that annoying game your friends keep pestering you join on Facebook, we’ve all dabbled in these fun time-wasters
Apparently officials at oil company Baker Hughes Inc. have one game that’s gaining popularity, and they want to replicate the game’s style to help engage younger tech-workers.
In a recent story on BusinessWeek.com, a senior manager for digital marketing at Baker Hughes – Joel Tarver – noticed workers at his company relaxing during breaks and playing the addicting game Candy Crush on their smartphones.
Tarver used his marketing magic to convince his bosses at Baker Hughes to let him build an oilfield version of the game, so workers could enjoy their game while also geting a little on-the-job training.
The story goes on to say that the game was also developed to help spread the idea that “the oil business has evolved into more of a high-technology industry that requires the kind of computer-savvy workers who might normally head off to Silicon Valley.”
Tarver and his team were asked to design a smartphone app to help oilfield workers select form a digital catalog of drill bits. It was during the breaks in those meetings when he noticed his crew was playing Candy Crush. Tarver convinced his bosses that by designing an oilfield-themed game, it would serve as internal marketing for the new “BitGenie” drill bit app while teaching employees some company history through trivia snippets uncovered as players advanced through the game.
Tarver’s game – called Bit-Tacular – has been downloaded about 20,000 times since its debut and is available at the Apple Inc. App Store.
Tarvers team has also made three other oilfield game apps designed to entertain and deliver corporate messages.
· Deliver It – A driving game with music as gamers race to the oilfield through rough terrain without spilling their tools.
· Wildcatter – Gamers drill wells as fast as they can to find oil. If they don’t work fast enough, they’re fired.
· Recall – This simple matching game pairs oilfield tools with Baker Hughes’ service divisions to help technicians with memory.
Plans to release those three games on the App Store are in works.
