Kamvalok and Drylok dry disconnect couplers from OPW Engineered Systems, a division of the OPW Fluid Transfer Group, are designed to prevent accidental disconnects while providing total fluid containment at well or industrial sites.

The Kamvalok features a poppet action to eliminate spillage of residual liquid contained within the transfer line after disconnection. To ensure greater safety, the coupler was redesigned to add a locking handle and locking cam.

“This was something many of our major customers had been asking for,” says Dave Morrow, product manager with OPW.

When used with the OPW 2173N Vapor Recovery Dry Disconnect, the Kamvalok protects people and property from potentially costly exposure by keeping hazardous liquids and vapors inline and out of the environment.

The Kamvalok provides automatic closure at both the coupler and adapter. Part of the 1700D series of couplers, its cam-and-groove design makes connection smooth and easy. The open/close lever action helps ensure liquid flow can only begin once the coupling and adapter are securely coupled – even in high-pressure applications. Its 360-degree orientation also enables the coupler to be connected in any position.

The Drylok connection system, designed to transfer corrosive, volatile liquids such as acids, solvents and petrochemicals, features an interlocking handle to prevent accidental spills during high-pressure fluid transfer. It can be opened and closed against 150-psi maximum head pressure. The coupler’s flat face helps minimize fluid loss, further reducing the risk of exposure.

“It’s a little more heavy-duty industrial (than the Kamvalok),” Morrow says. “It also gives you a little better flow and a little less drippage at the disconnect where you can’t afford any drippage or spillage (less than 1 cc from a 3-inch unit).”

The Drylok coupler meets or exceeds all emission and worker safety requirements set by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and OSHA. Available in 1-, 2- and 3-inch sizes, the unit features O-ring seals for longevity and adjustable packing nut with V-type material for a continuous compression, emission-free seal on the handle shaft. The coupler is available in 316 stainless steel, Alloy 20 or Hastelloy with NPT, BSP, ASME, flanged, BW and SW end connections.

Both dry disconnect couplers are made to meet OPW’s focus of Zero Harm to people and the environment.

“We understand that we’re in a business where people could get hurt,” Morrow says. “People are dealing with some very dangerous products. If they’re exposed, it can do a lot of harm to the individual and the environment. So we take that very seriously. One of the things we say is we want people to go home at the end of the day just like when they came in the morning – with no harm.
