For Pump Solutions Group and RKI Instruments Inc., attending the 21st Williston Basin Petroleum Conference is a chance to connect with new customers and show what they have to offer.
“It’s important for us to continue to develop relationships and to look for new relationships,” says Doug Cumpston, Pump Solutions Group’s director of global segment marketing, energy.
Counting Pump Solutions Group and RKI Instruments, there will be over 300 exhibitors at the conference held at Evraz Place in Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada, from April 30 to May 2, according to Melinda Yurkowski, assistant chief geologist of Saskatchewan Geological Survey and conference co-chair.

Saskatchewan Geological Survey and the Petroleum Technology Research Centre (PTRC) host the conference and the theme for this year is New Energy Horizons.
New interest brings new relationships
“The focus will be on new technologies and sparking new interest in the Williston Basin as an oil producing region,” says Yurkowski.

Yurkowski says the conference, which began in 1993 as a symposium in North Dakota for 160 invitees, is expecting around 2,000 attendees this year. Those attending will experience two components — a trade show and a technical program.
“We set the conference so that there is plenty of time for the attendees to have ample opportunity to visit the exhibitor booths and equipment displays both inside and outside the Credit Union Eventplex, and to attend the technical presentations as well,” Yurkowski says.
PSG and RKI Instruments are both marking their second years attending the show.

“We are entering into the Bakken market and last year's show was a bit of a launch for us,” says Dave McEndarffer, national sales manager for RKI Instruments. “It will help establish new contacts as well as reinforce existing ones.”
Cumpston notes that PSG started attending the conference because it’s an area the company wants to grow into. “It’s a significant growth area for us and we have a number of technologies that are very well suited through the oil and gas that they produce in the market,” he says.

PSG will be exhibiting pumps and compressors at the show, including sliding vane pumps and reciprocating gas compressors (Blackmer); 811 Series ANSI centrifugal pumps (Griswold Pump Company); 500 Series hydraulic diaphragm metering pumps (Neptune Chemical Pump Co.) and the Advanced Metal Series Air-Operated Double-Diaphragm (AODD) Pump (Wilden).
“We’re actually showing two other things as well,” Cumpston says. “We will have the Maag S Series Screw Pumps and the Maag G Series Gear Pumps. They’ll both have significant opportunities in this market.”
RKI Instruments will also be showing off some of its newest technology.

“We will be launching a new product that we are very excited about,” McEndarffer says. “It is a wireless monitoring device for rig site safety.”
Change creates focused event
Yurkowski says the focus of the conference has always been on technology, but some changes have come about since the first show 20 years ago.
“The conference began as a means of sharing technical knowledge and identifying business and investment opportunities for companies on both sides of the border,” Yurkowski says. “Horizontal drilling greatly enhanced the rate of recovery of known oil and accessed new oil, so timely dissemination of knowledge of new techniques, equipment and geological controls was important. As horizontal drilling became more common place, the focus of the conference evolved into other new technologies and became a more diverse event in terms of what was being discussed.”
Yurkowski adds that lately the focus has been on fracture technology and expects to see other new technologies come to the forefront.
“What does remain constant is that this all ties into understanding the technologies as they pertain to Williston Basin oil production,” Yurkowski says.
The trade show and technical program take place at the Evraz Place building, with technical sessions held in two large rooms adjacent to the trade show floor. There is also a public session housed in a separate portion of the building.
For the public session, which is free to the general public and interested conference registrants, four speakers will present on May 1. The speakers are David Hammermeister of MNP (tax planning for freehold mineral owners); Bethany Kurz of Energy & Environmental Research Center (an overview of hydraulic fracturing); John Styles of Auburn Energy (how to get a well drilled and on production); and the Saskatchewan Geological Survey (Petroleum Geology of Saskatchewan).
